Rivian Home Charging: The Setup Guide for R1T and R1S Owners
I have installed chargers for 23 Rivian owners in Henderson over the last 18 months. R1T and R1S owners have some specific considerations that do not apply to Tesla or Ford drivers. Here is the honest guide.
Rivian's Charging Specs (Gen 2)
The refreshed 2025+ R1T and R1S (Gen 2) have these Level 2 capabilities:
- Max acceptance: 48A / 11.5 kW (Dual Motor, Performance, Tri Motor)
- Standard trim: 48A / 11.5 kW
- Connector: J1772 on 2024 and earlier; NACS on 2025+ models
- Onboard charger: 11.5 kW standard
Gen 1 (2022-2024) R1T and R1S also cap at 11.5 kW and use J1772.
Real-world charging speeds:
- 32A circuit: 23 to 25 mph (8-10 hours for full charge on Large pack)
- 40A circuit: 30 to 32 mph
- 48A circuit: 36 to 40 mph (5-7 hours full charge on Large pack)
Your Three Home Charging Options
Option 1: Rivian Wall Charger
Rivian sells their own unit for $800 (plus install). It delivers 48A, has a 25-foot cable, and integrates with the Rivian app.

- Seamless Rivian app integration (schedule, energy, lock)
- 25-foot cable is longer than most competitors
- Made for Rivian's fit and finish standards
Cons:
- $800 is $300 to $400 more than equivalents
- Rivian app integration is the only real smart feature
- J1772 only (Gen 1) or NACS (Gen 2); no universal option
- Replacing an out-of-warranty unit can be slow (Rivian service network is still building out)

Option 3: NEMA 14-50 Outlet + Portable EVSE
Rivian ships a portable charger with every vehicle that supports NEMA 14-50 at 32A.
Pros:

- 32A caps your Rivian at 25 mph instead of 40 mph
- Portable charger cable is shorter (20 feet) than hardwired options

The NACS Adapter Question for Gen 2 Owners
2025+ Rivians ship with NACS ports but come with a J1772 adapter for backwards compatibility. This means:
- If you install a Tesla Wall Connector (NACS native): plug directly, no adapter needed. Tesla's Universal Wall Connector is overkill because your Rivian already has NACS.
- If you install a J1772 charger (ChargePoint, Emporia, Wallbox, Grizzl-E): use the J1772 adapter that came with your Rivian. No extra purchase.
- If you install a NACS charger with no J1772 port: no adapter needed for Gen 2; Gen 1 requires a J1772 to NACS adapter.

Savings of $720 for a slower charger. For daily driving under 100 miles, the cheaper path covers it. For the Max pack and frequent adventures, 48A is worth it.
Panel Considerations for Rivian Owners
R1Ts and R1Ss tend to go to homes that have other big loads: large HVAC, pool pumps, electric ranges, occasional second EVs. A load calc is non-negotiable.
- 200A panel with gas appliances and no other EV: 48A fits easily
- 200A panel all-electric: probably fits; may need panel upgrade
- 100A panel: upgrade to 200A before installing any Level 2 charger
Rivian-Specific Tips from 23 Installs
1. Mount high. R1T/R1S are tall. Chargers mounted at 42 inches off the floor strain cable length on the driver side. 48 to 54 inches works better.
2. Cable length matters. The 25-foot Rivian Wall Charger cable reaches both sides of most 2-car garages. Shorter third-party cables (15 to 20 ft) often require repositioning your Rivian.
3. Schedule off-peak in the Rivian app, not the charger. The in-car scheduling works on every charger. No need to pay extra for a smart charger if this is your only use case.
4. Rivian Adventure Network locations. The nearest are Barstow, Baker, and Beatty. Plan road trips accordingly. Tesla Supercharger access via NACS unlocks for Gen 2 throughout Nevada.
5. Outdoor Rivian Wall Chargers work. Rated IP55. I have mounted them on exterior walls in Anthem with no issues through two Henderson summers.
