Switching From Gas to EV: The Home Prep Checklist
Most of the Henderson homeowners I meet are 30 to 60 days out from their first EV delivery when they call me. That is the sweet spot: enough time to get a charger installed before the car arrives, not so much time that decisions have been deferred.
This is the checklist I walk every new EV buyer through, condensed into readable form.
8 Weeks Out: Understand Your Car's Charging Needs
Different EVs have different Level 2 acceptance rates. Before picking a charger, know your car.
Common 2026 EV Level 2 caps:
- Tesla Model 3 / Y: 48A (11.5 kW)
- Tesla Model S / X: 48A (some legacy 72A)
- Ford F-150 Lightning: 48A standard, 80A with Charge Station Pro
- Rivian R1T / R1S: 48A
- Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, Kia EV6/EV9: 48A
- Chevy Bolt: 32A (hard cap)
- Chevy Silverado EV / Equinox EV: 48A
- BMW i4 / iX: 48A
- Lucid Air: 80A
Your charger only needs to match what your car can accept. Oversizing is wasted money.
6 Weeks Out: Assess Your Electrical Panel
Open your main electrical panel (or have someone do it). Note:
1. Panel amperage: Stamped on the main breaker (100A, 125A, 150A, 200A)
2. Available breaker spaces: Count empty double-pole slots
3. Age of panel: Pre-1990 Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels need replacement regardless of EV plans
4. Condition: Any rust, burn marks, or buzzing? That is a service call today.
What fits where:
- 100A panel: Usually 24A / 30A EV circuit at most. Often needs panel upgrade for anything more.
- 150A panel: Typically handles 32A / 40A circuit. Confirm with load calc.
- 200A panel with gas appliances: Handles 48A easily.
- 200A panel all-electric: 48A usually fits; occasionally needs upgrade or load management.
5 Weeks Out: Budget Realistically
Henderson install costs Q2 2026:
| Setup | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| NEMA 14-50 outlet, short run | $375 | $925 |
| Hardwired 48A charger, short run | $1,150 | $1,650 |
| Hardwired 48A charger, long run (50+ ft) | $1,600 | $2,400 |
| Detached garage install | $2,400 | $5,900 |
| Panel upgrade 100A to 200A | $1,800 | $3,800 |
| Panel + charger bundle | $2,500 | $4,800 |
Budget 10 to 15 percent above the mid-range quote for "surprises" (rotted wood at panel, unexpected conduit routing, HOA revisions).
Also budget for the federal 30C tax credit: 30 percent back up to $1,000 if your home is in a qualifying census tract. Most of Henderson qualifies. Keep your invoice with the installer's name and Nevada license number.
4 Weeks Out: Charger Selection
Decide between:
Need a professional installation quote?
Henderson EV Charger Pros handles everything — permits, wiring, and installation. Free estimates, no obligation.
1. NEMA 14-50 outlet + the car's included portable charger. Cheapest. 32A max.
2. Hardwired Level 2 charger. Faster (up to 48A) and cleaner look.
If hardwired, pick the brand:
- Tesla owner: Tesla Wall Connector (or Universal for future flexibility)
- Ford owner: Ford Charge Station Pro (if 80A capable) or any 48A Level 2
- Rivian owner: Rivian Wall Charger or ChargePoint Home Flex
- Everyone else: ChargePoint Home Flex or Emporia Smart Level 2

3 Weeks Out: Get Quotes
Call three licensed Nevada electricians. Ask each for a line-item quote. Use our quote-reading guide to compare.
Verify before hiring:
- Nevada State Contractors Board license: check NSCB.state.nv.us
- Insurance certificate (general liability + workers comp)
- Willingness to pull a Henderson permit under their license number
- Written warranty on labor (1 to 2 years standard)
2.5 Weeks Out: HOA Submission (If Applicable)
If you live in an HOA (Anthem, Seven Hills, Lake Las Vegas, MacDonald Ranch, Green Valley Ranch, Sun City, etc.), submit your ACC request now.
Include:
- Charger make, model, and location
- Electrician's license + insurance
- Site sketch
- Reference to NRS 111.239 (protects EV charger rights)
See our HOA guide for a template.
2 Weeks Out: Permit and Scheduling
Your electrician pulls the City of Henderson electrical permit. Allow 3 to 7 business days. Schedule install day for 7 to 10 business days out to leave room for permit processing and inspection.
1 Week Out: Install Day
- Clear the path to your electrical panel
- Move vehicles out of the garage
- Note the location you want the charger mounted (eye level or higher is common)
- Have cable routing preferences ready (left wall vs right wall vs ceiling)
- Plan for 2 to 5 hours on site
Most Henderson installs finish same day. Longer runs or panel upgrades take 1 to 2 days.
Install Day + 1 to 3: Inspection
Clark County inspector arrives. If work is correct, you are signed off same visit. If corrections are needed, your electrician handles them at no charge (assuming the quote was full-scope).
Day Car Arrives: First Charge
1. Plug in and confirm the car communicates with the charger (charge port light turns blue or green)
2. Verify charging starts within 60 seconds
3. Let it charge to 80 percent at least once to confirm the circuit handles sustained load
4. Set up scheduled charging in the car's app (or the charger's app if dumb car / smart charger combo)
30 to 60 Days Later: Bill Review
Compare your NV Energy bill to pre-EV baseline. Typical increase for a daily commuter EV:
- 8,000 miles/year = roughly 2,300 kWh/year = ~$20 to $30/month on NV Energy
- 15,000 miles/year = roughly 4,300 kWh/year = ~$35 to $55/month
Consider enrolling in NV Energy's EV time-of-use rate if you charge mostly off-peak. See rebate and rate guide.
Other Prep Items People Forget
1. Cable hook or holster: $15 to $40. Keeps the cable tidy and off the garage floor.
2. Whole-home surge protector: $250 to $500 installed. Protects the charger and your car from Nevada's occasional monsoon lightning.
3. Garage GFCI upgrade on adjacent outlets: If any 120V outlets in the garage are non-GFCI, bring them to code while the electrician is already there.
4. Extra conduit capacity for future second EV: Costs $50 to $100 extra at install, saves $400 to $800 later if you add a second charger.
The Shortest Possible Checklist
If you are 30 days out and overwhelmed, here are the must-dos:
1. Know your car's Level 2 acceptance rate
2. Open your panel and confirm it is 150A or larger with empty slots
3. Get three quotes from licensed Nevada electricians
4. Submit HOA request if applicable
5. Electrician pulls permit
6. Install complete before delivery day
Henderson EV Charger Pros handles the whole process: assessment, quote, permit, HOA packet, install, inspection. Call (838) 205-8397 to get started 4 to 8 weeks before your EV arrives.
